Completing on-line applications for a Visa
AVOID GETTING A RED CARD FROM THE IMMIGRATION OFFICER BY SEEKING ADVICE FROM AN EDUCATION AGENT IF YOU ARE IN ANY DOUBT. M&H WILL MAKE NO CHARGE FOR GIVING ADVICE AND IT MAY SAVE YOU MUCH TIME AND MONEY <iframe
The following information is specific to the UK Immigration Service. However, other countries immigration services will adopt a similar process.
Care must be taken when completing on-line applications for visas. It is imperative that the correct visa is applied for , otherwise, the application will be rejected. Consider three possibilities:-
a) a student wishing to learn the English Language for a period of under 6 months,
b) a student wishing to learn the English Language for a period of over 6 months ( up to 11 months)
c) a student wishing to take a university foundation course.
The Visa requirements are basically common sense, however, the documentation required to be presented and completed (on line is the trend) can be confusing. Particularly, when new web sites are used, the wording can lead to errors in completion. As an example, for Visa applications to the UK, the UKBA has outsourced the screening of visa applications to a new organization. (See www.VFSGlobal.co.uk). This site is where you complete an online application form providing all personal details as a first step. The second step is to select the visa appropriate to the reason (e.g. student) that you wish to enter the country. Selecting the appropriate visa is a three stage process as follows. Presented for selection :-
a) Reason for requiring a visa
b) Visa type
c) Visa Sub Type
In general, for students wishing to learn English, the Visa type (b, above,) will be ”(special) Visitor”. However, when entering into (c), above, there is a choice of nine sub-types. Most of these sub-types can be immediately see as not appropriate (Child/Marriage/Parent/ Medical). This, then, leaves two sub-types for selection. They are:- (Special) Student Visitor to Study English Language OR (Special) Student Visitor up to six months.
Confusion arises with “(Special) Student Visitor up to six months “ as elsewhere in the site it is shown that a visa can be granted for a student to take a course, any course as it is not specified, and can apply for a visa up to a maximum stay of 6 months. It should read:- (Special) Student Visitor up to six months including short term (under six months) to learn the English Language” However, if you are studying the English Language, specifically over six months, a visa up to 11 months can be granted.
At this point, there is a concern in which selection to take. As most of the students coming to the UK shall be studying English then it is obvious they will (default) select (Special) Student Visitor to Study English Language. Once this selection is made a pop up message shows a 11 month visa is applicable for this selection only if the course is over 6 months. It is known, however, that if you have a English Language course under 6 months, then an 11 month visa will not be granted. Accordingly , special care should be taken when selecting from the drop down selection lists. Please reference
