A well known UK geologist went out to Florida to investigate the reason for the great number of sink holes that occur in the Florida peninsula. The subject was brought to the attention of the World when, without warning, a floor in a Florida home sank into the ground. The floor was in the bedroom of a Mr Jeff Bush. Of course, everything in the bedroom was drawn into the hole which, sadly, included the man who had just gone to bed.
Hearing the cries of the man, now in the hole, his brother rushed to the bedroom to find nothing but a large hole and the cries of his brother somewhere in the hole. The emergency services arrived and they got everyone out of the house and then realised the hole was unstable and the ground under the house was falling into the seemingly bottomless hole. They could do nothing. When daylight arrived and Mr Jeff Bush had not been heard for hours and could not be seen he was presumed dead. The house was cordoned off and much later demolished.
The number of sink holes in Florida is growing and currently there are in the order of 7000 identified sink holes in Florida. This makes Florida the number one location in the World for sink holes.
The geologist then took a boat and sailed to a point two miles offshore. The boat was stopped and the geologist stepped over the side but he did not have to swim as the depth of the water was no more than a meter. He then grabbed a handful of the material on the seabed and showed it to the camera. He said the problem is that the whole of Florida is the high level of a bank that has been built up over many millions of years by the accumulating remains of sea life and that is essentially bones and bones turn to limestone.
Back on shore he went to a place where he could point out that the rock was full of holes, which he could put his hand into. The holes had been originally limestone rock but acidic water had dissolved the limestone causing the holes. However, water alone would not not dissolve the rock and he then gave an experiment, He took a piece of the rock and poured clean water onto it. There was no reaction. He, then, took a small clear plastic bottle from his pocket. The bottle contained a very mild acid, The acid was a carbonic acid which is water with traces of carbon dissolved in it. He then poured a few drops of this fluid on the rock and the rock went “crazy” turning the rock surface into a mush and eating away at it. The point being that clear water has a Ph 7.0 were as any contaminated water, eg rain water of ground water has a lower Ph and a lower Ph is acidic. The conclusion the whole of the ground on which Florida is built is being dissolved and washed out to the sea eventually. Water with a small trace of carbon is rain which has fallen through a contaminated atmosphere on its way to earth.. The fact is that with the increasing number of people now building residential housing and bigger fruit growing farms the ground underneath is being melted away.
The geologist went into the Everglades with a team of divers and the team went into a huge underground complex of submerged tunnels which have all been caused by water melting away the limestone. The conclusion being the whole of Florida is sitting on Green Cheese which mice are busy eating away.
Since the event that killed Mr Jeff Bush happened the people in Florida have got very nervous.and drillers and concrete pouring companies have sprung up to supply the demand for there services. That is people call in the drillers and if the drillers suspect that the ground below the clients house is liable to sink they call in the concrete pouring people. Of course this is never ending.
The geologist visited an area of housing and interviewed the house owner. His question to her was which houses in her area are having concrete pouring . From her drive, she pointed out at least six properties that are having concrete pouring,
However, the death of Jeff Bush was a rare event and only 4 people have died due to sink holes but the property damage is huge. The situation is that cracks appear in buildings giving time for remedial work of abandonment accordingly there are few deaths.
However, at this time, not the whole of Florida is experiencing sink holes and the geologist then investigated why this was the case. Checking out the map of Florida’s sink holes there is an area in central Florida were no sink holes are evident. The geologist made some tests of the soils, at a depth, and concluded there was a clay level under the area where no sink holes have appeared but he then he made a second demonstration in which he proved that the clay was drying out and loosing is ability to “bridge” underground faults (growing holes). The clay, eventually, cannot support the weight of the earth about it and collapses. Why is the clay drying out. Because of the increased demand for water by the growing population.
So acid rain and water demand are killing Florida as the place to be.
